1 Kings

When Written: Around 900 B.C.

Synopsis: This book begins with the death of King David and the accession of his son, Solomon, to the throne of Israel. Solomon builds the temple that King David had wanted to build for the LORD, and a program of taxation and forced labor is instigated by Solomon to provide for the financial cost of the temple and the construction crews necessary for such a massive undertaking. King Solomon’s falling away from God due to the influence of his many pagan wives is a sad reminder that being the wisest person and the richest person in the world cannot save from sin and separation from God. The separation of Israel into two nations, Israel in the north and Judah in the south, after Solomon’s death is recorded and the book alternates back and forth between them recording their history and rebellion against God. The prophet Elijah makes his entrance into this history as God’s messenger to the people for a call to repentance and a return to following His commandments, laws and statutes.

Key Verse: And he said, LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee in heaven above, or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart. 1Kings 8:23
