Synopsis: Matthew is this writer’s favorite Gospel book because Matthew supports his narrative with quotes from the Old Testament to demonstrate that Jesus and the events associated with His life and ministry fulfilled prophecy and that Jesus was and is the promised Messiah. Each Gospel presents the life and ministry of Jesus in a slightly different viewpoint, and Matthew presents Jesus as the Lion of Judah, a King. This is evident in the first chapter where Matthew painstakingly lists the names of all the descendants from Abraham down to Jesus based on the blood line of Joseph, showing the connection to King David. Matthew records the Sermon on the Mount and many of Jesus’ parables. Matthew’s account teaches the believer how to heal the sick, how to pray, how to have faith, how to understand the kingdom of heaven, and many other important aspects of the Christian walk.
Key Verses: Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Matthew 16:24-27
