Amos

The book of Amos is the 30th book of the Old Testament and is considered to be one of the minor prophets because it is only 9 chapters in length. Amos is thought to have written this book around 784 BC and he was a contemporary of the prophet Joel and of the prophet Jonah. King Uzziah was ruling Judah and King Jeroboam II was ruling Israel at the time of this writing. It is a book of warnings from God of impending judgement and punishment of both nations because of their wickedness and sin and their rebellion against the God who brought them out of Egypt and made them a great nation.

Key Verses: “I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: Yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD. Therefore this will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, Prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.” Amos 4:11-13
