Nahum

Date: 700 BC

Synopsis: The book of Nahum is the 34th book of the Bible and was written most likely during the end of the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah and just before the reign of his son, King Manasseh. Twenty one years prior the Kingdom of Israel ended when the physical nation of Israel was taken captive and destroyed by the Assyrians under the leadership of King Sargon who reigned from 722 BC to 705 BC. The ten northern tribes that made up physical Israel were carried away into Assyria never to return just as prophesied by God through his prophets. So at the time that the prophet Nahum was writing, physical Israel was no more. Nineveh was the capital of the one world government and nation of Assyria. The book of Nahum reveals God’s judgement upon this city and its people and the fall of Nineveh. Remember that just approximately 85 years before this writing, God sent the reluctant prophet Jonah to Nineveh to preach repentance and pending judgement and the city repented at that time.
